GIZ Bac Lieu is cooperating with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Bac Lieu, October 2011. GIZ Bac Lieu is cooperating with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on the adaptation of rice cropping systems to the impacts of climate change.
Funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)  IRRI is implementing  a research project in Bac Lieu Province to assist in the “Adaptation of Rice Based Cropping Systems” (CLUES Project, 2011 – 2014)  in the Mekong Delta.

The GIZ Project "Adaptation to Climate Change through the Promotion of Biodiversity in Bac Lieu Province"  has the same objective for its rice component. This proved to be an ideal starting point for long term cooperation with IRRI. Together we will support farmers in salt intrusion areas with improved rice farming knowledge and technologies.

These activities shall be jointly conducted by IRRI, DARD and the rice farmers in the province. With this cooperation, farmers will get better and earlier access to newly released flood and salt tolerant rice varieties.  Also improved water saving (and GHG reducing) technologies to reduce production risks in the dry season will be introduced on a larger scale.
